A South African woman helps transform neighborhoods through organic gardening
In eco news, a South African woman helps transform neighborhoods through organic gardening. Sixty-three-year-old grandmother and farmer Ms. Christina Kaba, with the support of local women, has established 28 community gardens in Khayelitsha, one of Cape Town’s largest townships. Organically-grown vegetables from these and other neighborhood gardens are combined to create individual boxes for the Harvest of Hope Program. Since 2008, the market in Cape Town for the produce has grown from 80 to 600 orders weekly. This in turn has led to an increase in job opportunities. A big green salute, Ms. Christina Kaba and Harvest of Hope, for your Earth-loving efforts. May your organic offerings provide nourishing sustenance to many beautiful children of God.

Resolved Question: Are you guys growing food out there? Prices going up & every bit helps You & Poor in the world, believe or not?
Texas is burning, Mississippi flooding, water in California’s world bread basket still shut off, government is using food for fuel while they stifle every kind of affordable energy and fuel prices are going up so farming & transport is more expensive all the time … food is going UP
You may be able to absorb it, but a family earning $ 50 a month used to spend more than half their income on food when it was less than half the price, and they use basic staple foods, the math is simple, the reality is very harsh.
Even small areas can yield good results when you choose the right methods and crops. Especially if you help it along with a simple plastic sheet over a frame in cooler times and use compost & compost tea to give them what they need.
There are also almost forgotten very simple storage techniques. Canning is good, but can be expensive and a lot of work. Drying is something few people do with vegetables, but it actually retains vitamins & flavor better and shrinks down size & weight. You can effectively dry everything from beans to squash. about 1/2 the area & 20 – 30 % of the weight.
Ever heard of pumpkin leather? cut pumpkin or squash in 1/4″ slices and dry, keeps for years and reconstitutes great to make soup or pie.
You can cut green beans in 1/2 and dry in sun or a dryer. They come back great when boiled and retain great flavor and nutrition.
Smokers? I don’t, but if you do you can grow a certain number of tobacco plants. People are growing them in Canada, so most places can get the right plants to maturity. Especially if you start them in a little cheap plastic covered PVC pipe framed green house. I grew 1 tobacco plant last year to check it out and now I have thousands and thousands of seeds. The tobacco isn’t treated with all the crap and tastes much better (I tried a little, though I quit smoking a long time ago).
Anyway, if you want to do something for yourself, have better food, and or do something for the poor around the world, every little bit helps. Gardens all over the developed world, just little patches would do a lot to relieve demand and possibly keep food prices down to where we don’t see more starvation, because it’s happening out there. We’re not hearing about it, but it’s happening in the poor corners of the world.
OOps, I got on a roll and forgot, if you have any tips that would be great, please share. Can’t learn to much about this subject.
Grace, I agree, and everyone should know. Monsanto is basically the agri-devil. They are a perfect example of big corporations colluding with government. I save seeds all the time just because Monsanto is trying to contaminate all the crops with their mutations so they can claim ownership of all seeds, and government goes right along with it because Monsanto people infest government and they also bribe government. The Monsanto situation makes me so angry I could spit fire. They also try to destroy small farmers around the country, probably the world, so only big corporate farmers will be left.
